Volunteer Schedule | Directions to City of Refuge

All of us have been touched in some way by the devastating results of Hurricane Katrina last weekend. As brothers and sisters in the human race, we all have a responsibility to extend our hand to those whose lives have been turned upside down by this enormous tragedy. Thank you to all who have already responded and are asking, "What can I do?"

CITY OF REFUGE has offered the full spectrum of its services to help those displaced individuals and families that have already begun to arrive in Atlanta. We will be receiving and distributing a variety of goods and operating a continuous volunteer schedule for the next several weeks. In addition, we will be housing families that are without shelter.

Many people have called or e-mailed already to ask what they can do or what we need most. Therefore, we are sending out this general message that will convey important details that will make our efforts much more efficient and effective.

Please feel free to forward this message to your own family and friends. The enormity of this task will require the involvement of a large number of individuals.

Please pay careful attention to the following details and consider what you may do to bless your brothers and sisters from Louisiana and Mississippi.

NEEDS
1. CASH - CITY OF REFUGE is likely to operate 7 days a week for the foreseeable future. This schedule will require additional use of utilities, staff hours, fuel expense, etc. In addition, it is necessary for us to purchase many supplies and food items that will be used daily and cannot be stored. The addition of dozens of individuals on the property, both refugees and volunteers, will inevitably result in added expenses.

2. VOLUNTEERS will be needed 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. seven days a week. We are asking volunteers to a minimum three hour shift (longer if possible). You may volunteer from 9-noon, noon-3, or 3-6.

Sign up for volunteer shifts through Hands On Atlanta:

3. GOODS - The following items are needed. Please note that CITY OF REFUGE is accepting ONLY NEW, UNOPENED ITEMS. We cannot accept used items at this time due to the time involved in sorting and labeling used articles.

Due to the time involved in sorting and labeling,
please send NEW, unopened items.

Please note that all donations of goods should be delivered to the CITY OF REFUGE warehouse on Simpson Road. Our vehicles and drivers will be very busy delivering supplies and transporting people. We will receive donations of goods 7 days a week from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

***PLEASE NOTE: If you are considering purchasing small quantities of goods and making a trip to our facility to drop it off, you may be better served to make a financial contribution for the amount you planned to spend and we will use it for the things that are needed most. THANKS!
